Acne Vulgaris progresses from relatively mild to moderate, and eventually to severe forms. For most of us fortunately, the symptoms are arrested somewhere far below the extreme mark. Severe forms result in acne scars, cysts and lesions that are far less reversible than mild acne symptoms. Since face is the most ostensible feature of a person’s beauty, keeping a check on acne progression is fairly easy.

Acne in teens is caused by a change of hormonal levels during the adolescent years. Hormones are chemical signals that temporarily change the way our body system works. A higher testosterone level makes the skin produce more oil during teen years; the extra oil traps up skin cell debris and dirt and as the condition progresses, it starts to breed bacteria.

Similarly, hormonal changes that accompany normal menstrual cycle in women causes skin cells to produce more of oily secretions, also known as sebum. The accumulated oil and the trapped dead cells and debris start to clog the many pores that dot the skin surface. These pores can belong to hair follicles or glands.

Having some degree of acne during teen years or during accompanying cramps in not considered a diseased state. Yet, if the condition runs loose and start to breed bacteria, cause skin reactions or tissue scarring, you have a serious problem at hand. That’s why the primary way to control acne is to limit it to manageable levels where serious damage does not occur. Some people are more prone to severe acne while rest can sail through without much of an impact, and so the effort needed to bring it to the manageable level rests at different levels. Nevertheless, proactively cleansing your skin regularly, and preventing any products that lead to skin reaction is essential to your acne control regimen, no matter how severe your acne is.

If you see your acne getting out of hand -way too many pimples compared to your friends; reddened swellings; and greasiness -it is time to whip up your acne control. In such cases you need to agitate your skin as little as possible: pricking, rubbing or scrubbing your pimples or skin are now off limit procedures, while using towels or razor needs to be minimal and gentle.

It would be better to use some vitamins for acne treatment during teenage years. Please read our acne guide for more information on this topic.
