Portland, OR August 2, 2004 — Imagine cosmetic surgery without the bandages, scars or long recovery time. Dr. Douglas J. Key, founder of the Key Laser Institute for Aesthetic Medicine in Portland, Oregon has developed a new non-incisional procedure, Gentle Liftโ„ข, which lifts the skin from beneath the surface restoring its youthful appearance. Traditional face-lifts rely on pulling the skin, but Gentle Liftโ„ข is about lifting the skin by suspension. Dr. Key will share his research on reversing facial aging at the American Society of Dermatological Surgery meeting in San Diego in September.

Dr. Key was the first physician in the Pacific Northwest to begin using surgical thread implants, developing his own unique procedure for this amazing treatment. He places tiny threads of suture material beneath the skin gently lifting the skin. Patients opting for the Gentle Liftโ„ข treatment experience minimal recovery time, often returning to work after a weekend of rest. Additionally, the technique does not involve bandages and leaves no scarring.

As part of the research and development team for Thermageยฎ, I am more impressed with the results of the Gentle Liftโ„ข procedure, says Dr. Key. Thermageยฎ does a great job of bringing back the natural tightness of the skin on the face and neck, but Gentle Liftโ„ข begins where Thermageยฎ leaves off, and actually lifts the cheeks and jowls back to their natural position. Gentle Liftโ„ข results in an energetic and youthful look.

Over the counter chemical peels are affordable and easily available beauty treatments to help people get revitalized skin. These are milder versions of the professional chemical peels – the body treatment technique which promotes skin regeneration. The new skin that replaces the old layers is smoother and gives off that youthful appearance. These do-it-yourself peels may take longer than a professional one to have effects, but the price difference is significant, and with results in as little as a week, they are a viable alternative. They are also easy to use, and can be applied at home, versus having to visit a doctor’s office or spa.Using Over the Counter Chemical PeelsOver the counter chemical peels are basically light chemical peels that can help people get a more youthful appearance by treating wrinkles and other skin conditions while giving skin a vibrant glow. They use similar but diluted acids as professionally-applied peels. These are still effective though. One of the most commonly used acids is alpha hydroxyl or AHAs, namely glycolic acids. These naturally-occurring acids (they can be found in sugar cane juice, for example) are the mildest of chemical peeling formulas. A glycolic acid-based peel gently penetrates the upper layers of the skin and aids skin regeneration, or basically sloughing away the dead upper layers of the skin to make way for a younger new layer. Another common acid used is salicylic acid †these peels work well on sebum, and can benefit those suffering from acne greatly.Of course, reading and understanding the usage instructions of over the counter chemical peels is still very important for you to do. These diluted chemicals are still potent enough to cause damage when used improperly or when overexposure occurs, such as chemical burns that can scar and discolour the skin. These at-home peels also shouldn’t contain more than 10% glycolic acid, as greater concentrations are too harsh.Ideally, you should try a bit of the chemical peel on an patch of unexposed skin; this way, if there are any adverse reactions, the affected area will not be exposed in public. After proper application of the product, the skin may become sensitive to touch, and possibly red and puffy. These are effects of the chemicals in the peel working, and should not be scratched lest they turn worse. These side effects will fade in a couple of days, revealing a new layer of youthful looking skin where the peel was applied.Where Can I Get These Peels?Over the counter chemical peels are a more affordable yet still effective non-surgical means to getting younger-looking, revitalized skin. At around 25 to 40 dollars, they are a far cry from the hundreds or even thousands of dollars that professional peels can cost. Most local drug stores will offer these products, or you can purchase them online. As a cheaper yet still effective beauty treatment, these products should definitely be considered by anyone looking to improve their skin.br

DATELINE: COHASSET AND PLYMOUTH, MASS… The duo shared their expert knowledge of sun safety and melanoma (the deadliest form of skin cancer) prevention with more than 100 DNA members at the DNAs 27th Annual Convention held in San Francisco on March 6th. Â They discussed how skin cancer is most commonly caused by overexposure to sunlight, or artificial UV radiation and recommended that everyone follow SunAWARE, an acronym coined by Mary and John Barrow, authors of Sun Protection for Life: Your Guide to a Lifetime of Healthy and Beautiful Skin. SunAWARE stands for: Â Avoid unprotected UV exposure any time and seek shade Wear sun protective clothing including hats and sunglasses Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen prior to UV exposure and reapply every two hours Routinely check your whole body for changes in your skin and report suspicious changes to a health care practitioner. Educate your family and community about sun protection. Â Dr. Eisen taught that anyone can develop melanoma anywhere on their body and that new and changing moles should be evaluated. He also shared five tips on how to identify potentially dangerous moles or melanomas: Â Moles that are asymmetric, where one side of the mole does not match the other. Moles that have edges that are irregular, ragged or blurred. A mole that has more than one color, with shades of black, brown, red, white, blue or tan. Moles that are larger than a pencil eraser. Moles that bleed, itch or change in appearance. Â Certain types of moles have a higher risk of becoming malignant melanomas. Melanoma can be deadly because it can spread to other parts of the body. But, it may be cured in its early stages. Its very important to take preventative measures such as those outlined in SunAWARE and to watch for changes in the skin and follow up on questionable or changing moles with a dermatologist as soon as possible, explained Dr. Eisen. Â Childrens Melanoma Prevention Foundation The Childrens Melanoma Prevention Foundation, located in Hingham, Mass., delivers a comprehensive sun safety and melanoma awareness program, free of charge, to school children in Massachusetts. Led by Maryellen Maguire-Eisen, RN, MSN, the Childrens Melanoma Prevention Foundations SunAWARE program is delivered to children in elementary and secondary schools and teaches both skin cancer prevention and early detection. The foundation has won the 2009 American Academy of Dermatology Gold Triangle Award for their two new childrens books, Pretty Prom and Lake Vacation. Flaxseed Oil and Its Benefits

What Is Flaxseed Oil?

Flaxseed oil (also known as linseed oil) comes from the seeds of the flax plant. The flax plant is native to the Mediterranean and parts of India where it was first fertilized and grown in the Fertile Crescent. Historically, the flax plant was harvested, dyed and used for its fibers in Ancient Egypt.

Most peoples diets do not contain enough omega-3-fatty acids and could benefit from taking flaxseed on a daily basis. Flaxseed oil, taken on a daily basis, can be used as a dietary supplement to give our bodies the amount of fatty acids we need to maintain good health. Flaxseed is also an amazing source of antioxidants which contribute to excellent antioxidant health.

What are the Benefits of Flaxseed Oil (Linseed Oil)?

Flaxseed is usually recommended to people who suffer from or are at risk of high cholesterol and heart disease. Flaxseed is rich in omega-3-fatty acids which studies have shown, reduce cholesterol and the risk of heart disease. Although reducing cholesterol and fighting heart disease are some of the most popular benefits of flaxseed, foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids have huge benefits for our bodies in many different ways.

Flaxseed oil contains a fatty acid called alpha-linolenic acid or ALA which may prevent heart disease, inflammatory bowel disease, arthritis, clogged arteries and other health conditions. Flaxseed oil also contains a chemical called lignans which may possibly be linked to the prevention of cancer. Lignans are a form of antioxidants which some researchers believe are linked to preventing certain types of cancer and heart disease.

Also, flaxseed oil can be used to help reduce the appearance of scars, healing abrasions and if added to a diet low in omega 3 fatty acids, may reduce the incidence of acne, eczema and other skin problems. Flaxseed oil is also known to help the scalp hold moisture which can prevent dandruff and damaged hair- it also encourages the growth of healthy hair.

How Do I Incorporate Flaxseed In My Diet?

Flaxseed comes in two forms, oil and seeds. The oil is the easiest form to use, although it must be kept refrigerated and does not have a pleasant taste. The oil comes in liquid form in a bottle or in capsules. You can ask your doctor what he recommends as a daily dose, but generally speaking any more than two tablespoons is more than your body needs. One tablespoon of oil daily should be a good start on your way to heart and antioxidant health.

If you choose to use the actual flax seed, it is best to buy the ground seeds as they are more easily absorbed by the body. You can also grind the seeds yourself if you prefer, although it is more convenient to buy them pre-ground. The ground seeds have a nutty flavor and can be sprinkled over hot or cold cereals or salads or just mix 1 or 2 tablespoons in a full glass of water.

Where Can I Purchase Flaxseed?

Flaxseed Oil is pretty easy to come by these days, if you know where to look. Take a prolonged visit to Trader Joes or a Whole Foods Market to find the best brands of oil available. The actual flaxseed may be harder to find, but most health food stores will carry this either whole or ground.

As a warning, make sure that you refrigerate your oil, because unlike other oils, flaxseed oil can become rancid and dangerous for ingestion if not properly cooled and stored- so be sure to only buy flaxseed oil that is found in the refrigerated section of the store. Also, flaxseed oil only has a shelf life of a few weeks so never buy more than you can use in that amount of time.

Anti-Aging: Bog People Preserved By Peat

The remains of several hundreds of people– men, women, and children–have surface in the bogs of peatlans in northwestern Europe, particularly in Ireland, Great Britain, the Netherlands, northern Germany, and Denmark. These people that were found, are astonishingly well-preserved with nearly all of thier fingernails, hair, and teeth in excellent condition. How is this imaginable when the dates range from 8000 B.C. to the early medieval times?

The peat (Sometimes called Moor Mud or Moor Peat) held in the bogs has astonishing preserving properties which lend to its ability to both combat aging and enhance wellness. Peat has excellent moisture- retaining properties which enhances skin elasticity.

When peat is applied to the skin, it is asorbed for the most part between the epidermis cells of the skin, producing an exchange reaction of ions is produced when the binding process with albumin in your skin occurs. The harmful positive ions in the skin tissues over taken by and exchanged for rejuvenating negative ions in your moor peat. These particles are caught by the blood vessels in the system, carried throughout your body to aid healing.

The rejuvenating benefits can be attributed to your abundance of essential oils, fatty acids and lipoids. These properties absorb into the your skin re-establishing your skins natural pH balance. When you use the moor peat to your skin, the increased rate of flow of blood to the skin can be witnessed by the intensifying of vividness seen on your skin when the peat is washed off. This characteristic of Moor Peat makes it most effective as an addition to any anti-aging and beauty regime for your skin.

The soluble organic and inorganic active components leave your skin detoxified, purified, and strengthened. Its of course hypoallergenic and potent and yet gentle.

The anti-inflammatory, germicidal astringent and its bioavailability qualities of Moor Peat make an excellent skin treatment both for healthy and troubled skin.

It has been uncovered to be helpful in dealing with acne, eczema, psoriasis, burns, scars, stretch marks, and cellulite. For Cellulite, an inflammation of the subcutaneous tissues caused by a build up of toxins, poor blood circulation and fluid retention due to weak lymphatic flow, Moor Peat improves both the inflammation and its causes, making it an excellent treatment for cellulite and an aid to weight loss.

In fine spas Moor Peat (or Moor Mud) is regularly used as bath, body wrap, and facial treatments. Costs for treatments can be as high as $150 for a body wrap, $100 for a bath, and $85 for a mud masque or facial mask. These spa treatments can be executed successfully at home for fraction of the cost by purchasing fine quality Moor Peat from a prime supplier such as Moor Mud Baths (http://www.moormudbaths.com).br

Workouts Need Natural Supplements Like Androsterone

For athletes and body builders the workouts and training becomes rapidly a drug. This is of course the case for those that pursue body building as a competition. It can be overwhelming to witness a great increase in power for many body builders. But the exercise and diets only take you to a certain level of muscle growth, so many body builders end up using steroids. This is a big mistake, their effects being disastrous for the bodys overall health.

Theres a long history between athletes and steroids. Anabolic steroids are considered supplements, they practically boost the effects of workout and diet and significant power and muscle increase will be shown. Thats because steroids manage to help increase muscle mass growth due to the level of testosterone they contain. Testosterone is a hormone that is present in both men and women and of course using anabolic steroids will greatly enhance and accelerate its effects.

Naturally, men have a higher level of testosterone than women do, therefore they are able to achieve muscle mass growth faster. But when women end up using anabolic steroids theyre able to reach the same muscle mass as men. And of course, when a woman combines steroids with body building she will end up taking up male characteristics.

Using steroids in body building competitions is illegal. Obviously, a competitor that uses steroids has a clear advantage over one that does not use anabolic steroids. Therefore, steroids are banned from body building competitions and if an athlete is caught using steroids hes banned for life from competitions of this sort.

But the most important thing about steroids is that they leave the user with scars over a long period of time or possibly even for life. Diseases like acne, hair loss, insomnia, depression, hallucinations, high blood pressure, weak ligaments, heart attacks and cases of cancer have all been proven to have a link with steroids. Steroids have even caused fatalities amongst the athletes.

Of course, body building is indeed a discipline sport. Its up to every person to decide whether theyre gonna shape their body using natural ways or cheat themselves and use illegal products like steroids. And of course, the short term effects may seem rewarding but the long term effects will be devastating.

Of course, times have changed and the market today has products like androsterone that pretty much have the effects of steroids without the toxic side effects. Many years have passed to perfect a product like androsterone but from what Ive read, its pretty good./pbr

Prevention is the Only Real Solution – Infrared Light Therapy For Acne

This article will discuss acne and the use of Infrared Light Therapy to treat existing acne and to prevent from reoccurring. First lets set the stage with a few facts about acne and how it originates:

60-70% of Americans will experience acne at some time during their life
20% will have severe acne resulting in physical scarring or emotional damage
During adolescence, acne is more common in males than females
During adulthood, acne is more common in women than men
Acne can start the first few weeks of life when the infant is still under the influence of prebirth maternal hormones
Reaching puberty is generally when adolescent acne begins to appear
Acne can continue (although at much lower incidence) into adulthood through age 45
The main cause of acne is genetic (it may skip generations but is a genetic predisposed condition)
Certain ingredients in cosmetics and hair care products cause more severe acne
Medication containing steroids, lithium, anti epileptics and iodides may cause more severe acne
Hormone disorders and fluctuations can cause acne or acne to become more severe
Constant wearing of headbands, shoulder pads, back packs, underwire bras, and etc. can aggravate onset or worsen existing acne

An Acne blemish results when sebaceous hair follicle (pore) becomes clogged with dead skin cells that have not sloughed off. The residual cells become sticky and clump together to form a plug which traps oil and bacteria inside the follicle. After being plugged, the follicle continues to produce your skins natural oils causing swelling. The swelling and irritation notifies an army of white blood cells that they need to attack the bacterial infection in the follicle. Their attack culminates in a pimple, either a blackhead or whitehead.

During the last two decades, there has been continued success with infrared light therapy and light therapy in general, in treating existing acne problems and preventing recurrence. Those that respond to the treatment see a drying out of existing acne blemishes and over the long term, improvement in sloughing dead cells and decreased formation of follicle plugs. Regular, continued therapy has shown to be effective in prevention of new blemishes occurring. Using infrared, also eliminates the damaging UV rays that come from natural sunlight and some forms of artificial light.

The infrared light treatment can be administered in several forms either under doctors care or on your own. There is no prescription required to buy equipment needed for infrared light therapy. Following is a list of the most common methods for administering light therapy for acne control and prevention:

Light boxes – Wooden or composite material boxes with fixtures for infrared lamps. The acne sufferer puts their face or affected area at a predetermined distance from the box on a schedule consistent with the severity of their condition.
Open book – Looks like an open book which may be opened or closed depending on need. The acne affected area (generally face with this unit) is placed near or between the pages allowing even distribution of the treatment.
Sauna – There are saunas built with fixtures for infrared lights. Your therapy occurs while sitting in the sauna. While these are a more expensive alternative, they do provide the most therapy coverage of the body.
Wand – Smaller wands or guns with a built in light source that is applied to a specific area, typically not the face. They are generally used for acne conditions on the arms, back or buttocks.

These are but a few of the most available. There are constantly more methods and regimens being developed. Our next article will describe suggested applications and schedules of use depending on specific acne conditions.

Handy Hints to Get Rid of Acne

Acne is very common and nearly all teenagers have battled with it at some stage. It is an unsightly embarrassing problem which can also cause pain. In this article there are some tips on how to get rid of acne.

The bodys skin glands produce an oily substance called sebum aided by the hormone testosterone. Acne occurs when too much sebum or other external substances, such as oil, dirt or dead skin cells, cause the hair follicles to be blocked. This can range from a simple blackhead to a full acne infection depending on the severity of the problem.

Though acne cannot be cured, it can be reduced with an effort and change in habits. Here is some advice to help get rid of acne.

Do not touch it. If you squeeze your spots you will force the contents deeper into the skin and you will probably end up with an infection. Also your hands are covered in dirt, oil and bacteria which you do not want to get into your pimples.

It is advisable to avoid oil-based products on your skin, such as make-up, hair gels and sprays, lotions, creams and sunscreens. This applies to other oils like cooking oils too so beware of oily foods such as potato chips and other junk food. Excessive oil on the skin will clog up your pores and help to cause acne. To help get rid of acne switch to water-based products and cut down on oily food.

It is known that washing too much or harshly can make acne worse because it makes the skin dry and sore. However it is advisable to wash your face twice a day, using a gentle soap and water. Avoid strong soaps and facial scrubs as these can damage your skin and glands and dry the skin out which will worsen the problem. Sebum is produced to protect your skin so if you fight this by exfoliating or cleansing excessively you will not do yourself any favours.

A dermatologist will be able to give you advice on what over-the-counter products are effective. The lotions contain substances such as benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, resorcinol and sulphur which help you to shed dead skin cells, gets rid of dirt and oil and destroys a build up of bacteria. It is important to try out several products to see what suits you or to get professional advice as these ingredients are skin irritants and need to be used with care.

Many doctors and dermatologists will prescribe antibiotic pills for very bad acne or if it is causing scarring. Antibiotics such as tetracycline and monocycline can have very bad side-effects so it is important to monitor their use. The hormones in oral contraceptives can also make acne worse so a doctor will often advise an alternative means of birth control if you take these.

An obvious thing to take into account is to eat healthily and keep up your vitamin intake. After all, a healthy diet ensures that your body can optimally fight infection and acne is simply an infection of your skin.br

Curing the acne or the underlying problem

For quite a large number of young people, acne is a real problem that has to be endured alongside many other by-products of adolescence and growing up. Many young people, when visiting the doctor, are told that it is a condition of age and that they will just have to cope with it. This is not easy to hear when you are in your teens, when life doesn’t make much sense anyway and now the confusions of adolescence – instead of remaining hidden, have to be visible to friends, family and potential girlfriends or boyfriends. It’s worse when people know that something unmanageable is going on in your body. Fortunately there are now acne clinics that not only supply ointments for the annoyingly irritating spots and scars, but also look at underlying problems to try and dissuade the condition from returning. Often a more holistic approach is needed to the treatment of acne and acne clinics focus on this. Alongside suitable ointments, a person’s diet can be examined to see whether they have intolerances or any allergies to certain foods. This line of research seeks to establish the root cause of the acne, attack the source rather than purely salve the lesions and hopefully get rid of the condition for good. Acne clinics also look at other related problems such as stress, make-up, sex, and using The Pill. To keep costs down, acne clinics schedule one initial appointment where the client will fill in a lifestyle questionnaire and from this, future treatment will be decided upon. The acne clinic then supports the client until the condition has cleared. Although the general problems with adolescence will continue, by attacking the acne, the trials and tribulations of growing up needn’t be quite so visible to others. This may form some thread of comfort to teenagers everywhere.br
